Paul’s Patio Barbecue, 19th May

Yesterday, I hosted a barbecue in my little courtyard at the back of my Cambridge townhouse. Despite rain most of the day and the promise of storms, the weather held off, as prayed for, precisely during the predetermined hours of the party. I thought I’d make the wine interesting and the way it was presented turned out to be quite a talking point. People got a taste of a taster’s tastings through the many different wines.

With hand-made burgers – mostly lamb – and jumbo frankfurters, I served
Cotes du Rhone Solitude 2001
St Chinian 2001
Condade de Egureu Tempranillo 2001
Ranch Series Syrah, Monterey 2002
Alamos Malbec 2002
Sangiovese Zilzie 2002
Klippenkop Pinotage 2003
El Vino Macon-Villages 2002
Cotes de Gascogne 2004
Alta Vista Chardonnay Mendoza 2001
Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2003
Chilford Hundred 2002
Les Escasses 2004
Viu Manent 2003
Chateau Poujeaux, Bordeaux, 1994

A special appearance provided by a guest was Pascal Mazet Champagne: very tasty – biscuity, light fruit, floral after-taste and plenty of very fine bubbles. The party was a resounding success!
