Fizz saver on the cheap

It looks rather like Darth Vader’s helmet, but it holds the fizz in champagne rather than the dark side of the force. There are many myths on how to keep champagne fizzy, including one about putting a teaspoon handle into the bottle, but the ones that work do so by holding the pressure in. A tight-fitting cork from a port bottle works well, but do remember that champagne kept in the fridge door will be agitated each time the door is open and closed.

The serious ones look like the one in the photo. I saw them on sale in Sainsbury’s at 8 pence each. Yes, 8p. At the checkout it rang up £1.99, so I asked one of the managers. He confirmed it was indeed 8p, so that’s what I paid. It had been £3,.99, he told me, then £2.99, then £1.99. Now they’d decided not to continue stocking it, they were getting rid of them. So I paid 8p and gave it to a friend. Imagine my chagrin two days later when I went back to buy another one for myself, and found the price had gone up 25 percent! Mine cost me 10 pence.
