La Mediteranee, Manama


I spent the week visiting clients in Bahrain and the UAE, neither of which I had been to before. I started in Bahrain, staying at the Ritz-Carlton just outside Manama. After a swim at the hotel’s private beach and use of the health club, I was feeling a bit hungry. There were several restaurants to choose from, but I went straight for La Mediteranee which is a mix of Arabic and Far Eastern cuisine served as a buffet.

I started with smoked salmon and capers, sushi and duck terrine. Then grilled peppers, asparagus, tuna in a spicy sauce and more smoked salmon this time with caviar. Next came steamed prawn dumplings, followed by a rest. The meat dish consisted mainly of lamb (chop, stew and minced with yoghurt dressing), grilled hammour fish and a chicken tikka salad. Reluctantly I passed on camembert and black forest gateau as I was too full, but I could manage a fruit salad made largely from strawberries, melon, pineapple and passion fruit.

With a double espresso came a selection of dark chocolates, including one with orange puree inside which was my favourite. A walk by the beach was required after all that, but it was a meal and a hotel to remember.
