A Birthday Lunch

Last week was my husband’s birthday. He is not the easiest of people to buy presents for but a gastronomic treat always goes down well. This year the venue of choice was Tom Aiken’s flagship restaurant in Chelsea for a most memorable lunch. We chose the tasting menu with matched wines, which turned out to be a fantastic choice.
Starting with a glass of Pol Roger Champagne, we were soon brought an amuse bouche of pea and chervil mouse with foie gras, accompanied by one of a choice of 12 different breads. Tim’s favorite was the semolina bread. We then got in to our stride with scallops, more foie gras, John Dory, lamb, the optional cheese course and two dessert courses followed by coffee and enough petit fours to make you think that you had moved on to high tea.
We have been lucky enough over the years to eat in a number of good restaurants and I can certainly say that Tom Aikens is one of the best that we have been to. The service, atmosphere and decor were all subtle and excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend a visit.
