Snails and rosé

I was treated to an excellent dinner at one of my favourite local restaurants – Chez Gérard. They do an excellent dish which they call ‘escargots’ (as in, snails, but the French sounds so much more appetising). You get the choice between six or twelve, so I chose twelve, and asked for bread alongside. I was slightly outraged to later learn that the rather stingy basket of bread cost £2.25, but took it on the chin (as my friend paid for the food, and me for the wine). The wine was a Cabernet rosé and very tasty – nice and dry. The snails usually come with a garlic butter sauce and a lot of very finely chopped parsley mixed with it. This time, however, it was an oil which had a green hue. It wasn’t as good, and there was no sign of fresh leaves. But the conversation was excellent, and we escaped just before the party of fifteen sat down next to us!
