Pre-Christmas lunch
Posted On December 23, 2008

It was a straightforward lunch at Balls Brothers in Buckingham Palace Road, but with a difference. My companion had the fish and chips, the latter tastefully arranged like a log pile with the fish sitting on top. One of the best in town, I was told, not forgetting the minted crushed peas. I had the beef sandwich – brown bread, lovely red roast beef, tomato, and a very good horseradish sauce.

The surprise was the Christmas dessert special, a “winter bread pudding with mulled wine.” It turned out to be a familiar summer pudding, but with mulled wine and cinnamon amongst the berries. It was good, too, and served with cream. With the meal we drank a nice crisp chenin blanc, from South Africa, of course.
