Dinner in Queens’ College

I went to a dinner in Queens’ College hosted by CUCA, the student Conservatives. It was a ‘white-tie preferred’ event with the girls in long shiny dresses and many of the boys in white tie and tails. I settled for a white dinner jacket, Humphrey Bogart style.

The starter was very good indeed, a warm leek and stilton tart. It’s something I cook myself sometimes, and which always works because it’s a good combination. The main course was less good, a braised lamb shank in red wine shallot sauce. It wasn’t that it was badly done, just that lamb shank is usually rather stringy, while I prefer my lamb moist and pink. It was made up for by the excellent almond and pear tart which followed. Great stuff. I knew better than to touch the ‘Fairtrade coffe,’ but I did enjoy the sauvignon blanc, ‘Les Nuages ’06,’ and the Saint Etalon merlot ’06, and of course the Queen’s label port which finished the meal.
