Cape Spring bargain

This was a Chenin Blanc from 2007 (pictured is 2006), and quite a snip from Aldi at £3.49. It’s from South Africa, of course, and the Western Cape, and a decent 12.5%. It won the ‘Commended’ category in the 2008 International Wine challenge, which makes it a perfectly acceptable drink, if not an outstanding one, which is fine at that price! It’s best consumed soon, no doubt, and I had mine with a wrap that included some cheese, olives, tomatoes, red onions and a dash of mustard, with cucumber that needed finishing alongside. The nose was clear and open, with lots of melons, the body was tangy, but with the slightly rounded, buttery edge you might associate with Chardonnay, and the finish was unremarkable, but satisfying enough. Well worth a try!
