Last of the Germain champagne
Posted On June 22, 2009

There was a bottle left after a garden party (unusually!), and I was offered it at a very good price. It’s Germain, described on the label as a balanced blend of the three champagne grapes, pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. It is nicely balanced, with citrus up front then the familiar biscuity taste – rather classy, I thought as I drank it at the party. My bottle will be one of the last, though. In the 2008 review of the champagne region and its production, Germain was one of two villages delisted. So whatever it continues to produce, they won’t be able to call it champagne…
