Reminiscence
Back when Ha!Ha! had a branch in Cambridge, I used to go there regularly to meet friends, as it was in a very convenient position in the centre of the city and opposite my college. They almost always offered some form of Arniston Bay wine, and I found one in the shop the other day, which was pleasing and reminded me of many a happy evening with friends. The one I got was a Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay blend from 2008. It’s made in South Africa, and this example was 13.5%. The Chardonnay component was unoaked, I suspect because that would likely drown out the Chenin Blanc’s more subtle flavours, but it still retained that marvellous straw-like nose, combined with the citrussy zest that I’ve come to expect from a South African Chenin Blanc. I enjoyed it with a friend over an evening’s discourse, but I suspect a roasted chicken would have matched well, especially if it was a young chicken with my favourite lime stuffed inside.
