McSorley’s Old Ale House

Whilst in New York, I took the time to visit McSorley’s Old Ale House on 7th Street, just off 2nd Avenue. It was dark and busy inside, with loud conversation stemming from the packed communal tables and old newspaper clippings on the walls tracing the history of the bar, the city, and even the Union…

Beers are $4.50 for a small (half-pint-ish) measure, but you get two for every one you order and the choice is limited: dark or light, both brewed by McSorley’s. I stuck at the bar, and was impressed by the bar staff pouring four beers at a time, and the table staff carrying eight in a hand! Both beers were good, with an impressive depth of flavour in the dark and a “session bitter” taste to the light. Above the bar was a bust of JFK – perhaps my favourite American President – surely a good sign?
