Cuban wine

I did not realize there were any Cuban wines. I suppose I had just assumed that tobacco and sugar would crowd out the cultivation of grapes. I was surprised to see Soroa, a Cuban white, “San Cristobal vino blanco de Mesa” at 12 percent. I chose it in preference to its sister red, kept alongside it in the fridge, and as cold as a block of ice. The white had virtually no nose, but was surprisingly quite agreeable. It had no length at all, and disappeared as you swallowed it. All the same, I’ve had far worse whites from Europe. It was crisp and refreshing.
