Mushrooms in Victoria Street

I occasionally have lunch in the Balls Brothers wine bar and restaurant at the very end of Victoria Street, where it meets Buckingham Palace Road. The food is decidedly above average for a wine bar, and although the wine list is not brilliant, it has just enough of the wines I like to make it worthwhile. With a plane to catch later in the day, and a rather limited time for lunch, I chose, as I usually do, to start with half a dozen quail’s eggs with celery salt. I went on to have mushrooms and Stilton on toast. It was just right, with succulent field mushrooms and not too much cheese to overpower their taste.

My lunch companion chose poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce, a kind of eggs Benedict without the ham. The egg yolks were cooked through, which would be a minus in my book, but he said it was pretty good. I drank a glass of a special wine they were promoting, a Spanish rose which was pleasant enough.
