Move Over Cheese
“Move Over Cheese” read the sign. Here be chocolate designed to accompany wine.
Thick bricks (or BRIX) of chocolate in Extra Dark, Medium Dark and Milk.
Extra Dark: aimed to accompany Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux and Barolo
Medium Dark: aimed at Zinfandel, Merlot, Shiraz and Rhone
Milk: aimed at port, Ice Wine, Pinot Noir, Rose and Sherry.
I’ve always been under the impression that chocolate and wine ruin each other. Much like wine and cheese. And I am sure this is true when we are talking about a good quality £20+ bottle or the finest piece of Stilton. However, when we’re talking about putting together nice combinations of lesser products I think there is a case for eating and drinking in a complementary manner.
I tried the Extra Dark with a full bodied Barolo and found that taking a sip of wine, melting a piece of chocolate on the tongue and then taking another sip was a not-unpleasant experience and released flavours of leather, cigars and oak.
The BRIX come on a wooden board, with a knife and are expected to retail at around the £25 mark. This is a bit rich for my money, but bought outside of a presentation pack it might find its way on to my table at some point in the future.
