This small port-side restaurant in Dubrovnik represents excellent value and amazing food.

Although it is perhaps not ‘cheap’ by the standards of a chap going to Croatia for a bargain snackette it certainly surpasses anything to be found in England in terms of quality, quantity and cost. These three dishes, plus 2 beers and 2 šljìvovica (plum brandy) cost 238 Kuna – about £25.

The best dish of the day was the octopus salad, octopus, capers, finely sliced purple onion, lemon juice… It was amazingly tasty.

The Squid were completely uncleaned, they even still had their quills in them (a fine spine very similar looking to a thinner version of a bird’s quill, sans feathers). They were superbly tasting, and clearly very fresh.

The most disappointing dish were the mussels, they all still had their beards – a term used to describe the last meal of algae the mussel has eaten that hangs out of their mouths. This just means the restaurant couldn’t be bothered to clean them in any way, which is perfectly in keeping with the rustic nature of the restaurant and doesn’t compromise taste in any way – however, it proves fiddling eating as the beard isn’t really edible and thus each tiny muscle had to be operated on.
