The utterly reliable St John’s Chop House

A friend drove down to Cambridge to visit, and we decided to see if the St John’s Chop House had space.  Yes it did, and 15 minutes later we were sitting down at the table, my preferred one near the window and the old fireplace.  I ordered two dishes both from the day’s specials.  First came the scallops, mouth-wateringly tender, and just nicely browned a little on the outsides.

Then came the venison, which I was told “is usually served pink.”  Just as well, because that’s how I would have asked for it.  It was gorgeously tender, and came with a stunning dark sauce.  I can’t recall having eaten better venison.  My companion had wood pigeon followed by half a pheasant and also enthused about the food.  We drank the Chilean Reserva Nostros pinot noir, which was just right.  This place is completely reliable for excellent food…
